Darryl is the Principal and founder of Chelmsford Legal.

Graduating with Honours from Murdoch University, Western Australia, in 2000, Darryl commenced his legal career an Associate to a Justice in the Supreme Court. He then worked as a Prosecutor for the Director of Public Prosecutions and later, as a Principal of a large legal firm in Perth, managing the Criminal team. Darryl left that firm in 2012 to establish Chelmsford Legal as a specialist Criminal Law firm.

As a Barrister and Solicitor, Darryl practices in all areas of criminal law, trials and court work. His expertise ranges from complex murder cases, fraud/white collar crime, sexual allegations and drug related matters. He also has conducted numerous appeals in the Court of Appeal with respect to conviction and sentence.

An important part of Darryl’s work includes representing clients who would like to plead guilty and who need representation to achieve the best sentencing outcome possible.

Darryl’s many years of experience, work ethic, dedication and willingness to go the extra mile for his clients, sets him apart as an advocate and counsel. He prides himself in being able to get to the heart of the problem quickly and in providing practical and balanced advice to his clients.

Darryl acts for clients who are eligible for a grant of Legal Aid and is on the Legal Aid “Register of Members” for the following panels:

Darryl has lectured at Murdoch University on the subject of Commercial Crime and Fraud and has been a presenter for the Law Society of Western Australia on the topic of Property Confiscations as part of the Continuing Professional Development program for legal practitioners in Western Australia. He also has provided presentations for the EROS association on the subject of Cannabinomimetics and on Advocacy for the Australian Defence Lawyers Alliance (ADLA). Darryl has contributed an article to Brief Magazine on the topic of the Criminal Property Confiscations Act 2000.

Katherine Dowling

Katherine has been with Chelmsford Legal since its inception and is an integral member of the Chelmsford Legal team.

Katherine graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Law from the University of Western Australia. She commenced her legal career at a top tier international law firm, working in the area of complex commercial litigation. She has since worked for two Perth based firms, where she broadened her practice into general civil litigation and criminal law.

Katherine provides advice and representation in all areas of criminal law, traffic law, restraining orders and criminal property confiscation law.

She has extensive experience in the Supreme Court, District Court, Magistrates Court and Children’s Court jurisdictions.  She regularly appears as counsel in jury trials, sentencing hearings, bail applications, interlocutory applications and mediations.

Katherine has outstanding interpersonal skills and prides herself on her ability to establish excellent working relationships with her clients to ensure that matters are resolved in a professional, practical and cost efficient manner.

In addition to her legal work, Katherine sits as an adjudicator for disciplinary hearings on the Football West Tribunal, WACA Tribunal and Rugby WA Judiciary.

Annemarie Tully

After graduating from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts, Annemarie was admitted to practice in December 2014. She began her career at a national law firm, where she started practising in civil litigation, family law and criminal law.

Since then, Annemarie has focussed her practice solely on criminal law and developed her advocacy skills through regularly representing clients at sentencing hearings in the Magistrates Court and District Court and instructing counsel at trial.

Annemarie is a dedicated and approachable member of our team who provides advice and representation on a wide range of criminal matters, including Children’s Court and traffic matters. She also has experience in representing clients in civil matters such as criminal property confiscations, criminal injuries compensation and restraining orders.

Annemarie represents clients in the Magistrates Court, Children’s Court and District Court and is on the Legal Aid Panel for Magistrates Court and Other Indictable charges and all criminal charges in the Children’s Court.

Nathaniel Smith

Nathaniel graduated in 2014 with Bachelors of Laws and Commerce from the University of Western Australia. He was admitted to practice in 2016.

Nathaniel’s passion for criminal law was piqued working for a Judge at the District Court of Western Australia, where he assisted the court in numerous matters, trials and sentencings and gained a unique perspective of the criminal legal system. He has undertaken clerkships and worked at a variety of international and boutique law firms in commercial and criminal law.

Since joining Chelmsford Legal, Nathaniel has regularly appeared in the Magistrates, Children’s and District Court and acted as instructing solicitor in complex District and Supreme Court trials. He prides himself on building strong client relationships, his eye for detail and enthusiasm for achieving the best outcomes for his clients.

Janelle Stanislaus

Janelle graduated from Murdoch University in 2014 with a Juris Doctor, and also holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Business Law and Accounting Double Major). She was admitted to practice law in 2016.

Even though Janelle is a qualified lawyer, she has decided to pursue an alternative pathway to traditional practice, and joined the Chelmsford Legal team in August 2017 as our Legal Secretary. She provides secretarial and paralegal support to our team including, but not limited to, conducting legal research, trial preparation, preparing briefs for counsel, and transcribing audio and visual recordings.

Prior to commencing at Chelmsford Legal, Janelle worked at a criminal law practice, where she was involved in the preparation and hearings of many complex criminal cases, including high profile criminal sentencings and trials, as well as criminal appeals, traffic and restraining order matters.

Teele Deschamp

Office Manager


Teele (pronounced “Taylor”) is the Office Manager at Chelmsford Legal.  She provides support to the whole team and is responsible for the efficient running of our office.

Her role involves the administration of our office procedures, as well as providing excellent customer service to our clients. Teele assists in maintaining accounts, invoicing and billing and oversees document management at Chelmsford Legal. She also liaises with our IT support and is responsible for updating software.

Teele is also in charge of Human Resources at Chelmsford Legal. She manages the induction of all new staff and organizes professional development for the Chelmsford Legal team.

As required, Teele makes travel arrangements, organizes attendances at conferences, books video links and prison visits.

An important part of Teele role is as a para-legal – which involves research, drafting documents for filing in court, transcribing video records of interview and arranging and preparing briefs for our lawyers. Teele has previously studied law in Estonia, completed her Certificate in Legal Services IV and The Essentials for Legal Assistance CPD course by the Law Society of WA.

Apart from speaking English, Teele is also conversant in Estonian, Russian and Finnish. She has experience working as an Estonian interpreter, representing clients in District Court and Magistrates Court.

Teele enjoys working with people – providing excellent service to our clients. She is an efficient and enthusiastic member of the Chelmsford Legal team.
